Celebrating Po and Uncle Donald’s Birthday

January 25, 2012 by ChrissyJee Leave a Comment

We celebrate Po (maternal grandmother) and Uncle Donald’s (my mom’s brother, her only sibling) birthdays around Christmas each year.  It changes each year because we celebrate according to the lunar calendar.  This year Po was turning 83 and Uncle Donald was turning 60!

Po and Uncle Donald's Birthday photoWe celebrated with a dinner at Delight 28 in Chinatown.  This is Po’s favorite restaurant.

Po and Uncle Donald's Birthday photoEveryone was in good spirits for the birthday celebrations.  This is a great family photo, everyone is smiling…even Gung!

Po and Uncle Donald's Birthday photoDinner was of course too much delicious food.  There isn’t much chatting when the food arrives at the table, everyone is too busy eating.  We ate lobster, Ging Do Pi Gwut (peking pork chop), fish, chicken, mayonnaise shrimp, and long life noodles.

Po and Uncle Donald's Birthday photoThe fish was especially tasty that evening.

Happy Birthday Po and Uncle Donald!

The Story Behind the 2011 Holiday Card Picture

January 12, 2012 by ChrissyJee 2 Comments

Now that the holiday cards have finally all gone out (three weeks after Christmas), I thought I would share the effort involved to take this yearly picture.

The holiday picture is getting harder and harder to take each year.  I have to find festive and comfortable outfits for the girls.  I need to get myself presentable.  I have to listen to Jeff complain, complain, AND complain about having to be in the holiday family picture.  He thinks we should only feature the girls, but I have to remind him (again) that our mailing list includes people that only know who he is so it would be nice to associate him with the random kids in the photo.  This year was especially hard because we didn’t have anyone around to take the picture so we had to go back and forth to set the camera on the timer.  Oh, and did I forget to mention this took an hour and a half?  Let’s just say there wasn’t any holiday cheer in the room at the end.

2011 Holiday Picture photoThis is one of the first photos.  Besides the glare on the right, not too bad, we thought we were close to “the picture”.  For the first 10 pictures we could not get Moy Moy (Isabella) to turn her head.  We could not see what she was looking at.  It must have been something only her baby eyes could see.

2011 Holiday Picture photoWe could only get Mimi to take the picture if we let her watch her YouTube videos on my iPhone.  This is what we looked like in between photos when Jeff was setting up the camera timer.  Of course Moy Moy is looking at the camera now!

2011 Holiday Picture photoThis was our runner-up photo.  Mimi’s smile was just terrible, but I was desperate.  It had been about an hour and everyone was getting restless.

2011 Holiday Picture photoI finally gave up on having the Christmas tree in the picture.  The glare was just annoying.  I grabbed a Christmas wreath from the wall and held it in my hand and we sat on the couch for the picture.  This picture isn’t bad but I thought we looked too serious.

2011 Holiday Picture photoThis was our picture!  It’s not perfect.  The girls hands are blurry.  I sometimes feel like there is no shutter speed fast enough to catch them still.  Luckily I was able to hide most of the blurriness with wording on the card.

I hope you have better experiences with your holiday card photo.  Happy belated 2011 Holidays!

It’s Time to be Number Two

December 23, 2011 by ChrissyJee 3 Comments

I have come to realize my life will always be crazy.  My body has finally adapted to the lack of sleep that comes with the joy of a newborn and was looking forward to the next couple of months settling into a more regular schedule.  (But since I have crazy life) Jeff came home one day and told me he is opening a hot dog shop with a couple of his friends in six weeks.  My reactions in the order listed below:

  1. WHAT?
  2. My hearing must be going.
  3. Hot dog!  I barely allow Olivia to eat hot dogs.
  4. Is there such a thing as an organic hot dog?
  5. WHAT?
  6. OK….Ok…ok.

Dobbs Dawg House photo

We went to see the shop.  This is the outside.  Looks good, right?  I’m thinking this is going to work, I’m excited!

Dobbs Dawg House photoThen we went inside…Yikes!

All kidding aside, now that the shock has worn off, I am very ok, I am very happy and excited, I am very proud.  For most of our fifteen year relationship, I have been number one.  Number one in the sense that I had the intense career that made more money so much of we did, what we had, where we went, was centered around me and my work.  I wish this wasn’t the case but money can be very powerful.  As nice as it was to have a lot of my own money, be able to provide for my family, and be good at my work, I felt empty inside and not truly happy.  I wanted to be a full-time mom raising my kids.  Being part of company lay-offs last year and deciding not to go back to work gave me my opportunity to stay at home.  Losing my income has been hard but has given Jeff the responsibility of being the primary provider.  I have always seen Jeff’s potential to be an entrepreneur (though some of his past decisions have made me wonder) and have been his biggest supporter.  He is the grumpiest husband in the world, but he is also street-smart, a great friend, and motivated, a combination necessary to be a good businessman.  I am excited for Jeff and his new hot dog shop, Dobbs Dawg House, and look forward to more businesses and projects in the future.  He is the new Number One.  Now I just need to get use to being Number Two.

Baby Nancy

Baby Nancy photoNhi has been a good friend of ours for many years.  Before getting married, kids, etc, we were hanging out with Nhi and Frank in Queens, getting drunk, and ordering grilled pork chop.  Times are much (much) different now.  On Oct 2, Nhi had a baby girl, Nancy.  She is such a cutie and he is such a proud daddy.  We went to her One-month party at Tao in NYC.

Baby Nancy photoIsabella and Nancy will be good friends.  They are less then two months apart.  Isabella is already checking her new friend out.

Jeff’s 3″x”th Birthday

December 14, 2011 by ChrissyJee Leave a Comment

Jeff’s least favorite time of year is his birthday.  I always ask him how he wants to celebrate his birthday and he always says the best gift he could get is for everyone to forget his birthday.  This is just one of the reasons why I have the grumpiest husband in the world.  This year we celebrated with a pork loin, Carvel ice cream cake, and a couple of home made cards.

Jeff's 37th Birthday photoMimi is one of the only people who can put a smile on Jeff’s face on his birthday.

Jeff's 37th Birthday photoShe loves to get kisses from her daddy.

PS. This was his 37th birthday…eeek!

Celebrating Thanksgiving with Olivia’s Class

December 13, 2011 by ChrissyJee Leave a Comment

Olivia’s pre-school class hosted a Thanksgiving party for both the kids and parents.  The usual sign up list of party foods to volunteer to bring went up outside the classroom.  I would usually sign up for something but this year with the baby and seeing paper napkins and plates already taken (these are always the first things to taken off the list), I passed but planned to attend with Ee-ee Bet to the party.

Olivia's Thanksgiving Party 2011 photoOlivia sat at a table next to Diego, across from Charles, and diagonal from Mia.  Charles’ mom, Joanna, came to the party so it was nice to meet her.

Olivia's Thanksgiving Party 2011 photoMia is currently Mimi’s favorite friend.  It use to be Melissa, now it’s Mia, in a couple weeks  it will probably be someone else.

Olivia's Thanksgiving Party 2011 photoI had Bet take pictures of Mimi’s art around the classroom.

Our Thanksgiving Celebration

November 30, 2011 by ChrissyJee Leave a Comment

Our families are close and live within an hour of us so our holidays are always multi-day and multi-home.  I love Thanksgiving because it is time spent with my family and close friends.  It’s a time to remember all that you have to be thankful for.  And even though you should be thankful more then once a year, life is busy and you forget, so it’s nice to have a time to reflect and remember.  I am thankful for…all the help from my parents and family taking care of my kids and keeping me sane, my grumpy husband for providing for our family, my two girls and how they have blessed my life, how different my life was a year ago.

Thanksgiving 2011 photoOur Thanksgiving celebration started out in Long Island at Melissa’s (Jeff’s sister) future sister-in-law, Katie’s, house.  Katie and her husband (Joe) have two wonderful kids, Kira and Joey.  Though they have only met Mimi once, they embraced her immediately and played with her like she lived down the block.

Thanksgiving 2011 photoThis was one of the first toys the kids played with.  Not the most non-violent…but super fun.

Thanksgiving 2011 photoMimi doesn’t have toys like this at home so she was excited to give it a try.

Thanksgiving 2011 photoMimi loved this guitar.  She is obsessed with this YouTube video of a little boy playing a ukulele and wants to learn how to play one also.

Thanksgiving 2011 photoWe ate Thanksgiving dinner at Aunt Martha and Uncle Davy’s house in Long Island.  It can be a hard trip out to the Island on holidays because of traffic.  It’s suppose to be a 45 minute trip that took us two hours.  Good things the girls slept the whole way.

Thanksgiving 2011 photoMatty with the baby.  He really likes to hold her and talk to her.  He will be a good dad.

Thanksgiving 2011 photoGroup shot.  Why are Bet and James so close?

Thanksgiving 2011 photoMay and my mom.  My mom is in the middle of making green bean casserole.  The can she is holding is Campbell’s mushroom soup.

Thanksgiving 2011 photoAunt Alice with the baby.  Look at those chubby cheeks (on the baby)!

Thanksgiving 2011 photoKimbie and the baby.  Moy Moy’s (little sister in Chinese) hair is looking crazy.

Thanksgiving 2011 photoMy mom and the baby.  My mom is the best mom.  Not only to me, but to my kids.  She is someone I am most thankful for.

Thanksgiving 2011 photoIt’s always fun to play games on Thanksgiving.  Can you guess who is under the table?

Thanksgiving 2011 photoMimi and Artie!

Thanksgiving 2011 photoMimi loves to be a silly goose.

Thanksgiving 2011 photoShe cracks everyone up.  Funny stories and laughing are always a big part of Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving 2011 photoHere is what is left of the turkey…only white meat.  We are a true Chinese family.

Thanksgiving 2011 photoThe day after Thanksgiving, my mom cooked a Thanksgiving dinner for her side of the family.  Kimbie and Mimi are making crusts for the pies for dessert.

Thanksgiving 2011 photoGung (maternal grandfather in Chinese) doesn’t leave home much anymore except when my mom invites him to her house.  He use to cook all the time for us but hasn’t in a long time.  He came out of retirement and chopped the lobster.  This was so great to watch.  I just learned how to chop a lobster and was going to do one, but decided not to embarrass myself in front of Gung.

Thanksgiving 2011 photoHis chopping is so precise.  It comes from cooking and being a head chef for many years.  In China he cooked for a very wealthy family.  When he came to America, he was a head chef of one of the top restaurants in Chinatown.

Thanksgiving 2011 photoSome of the courses for dinner.

Thanksgiving 2011 photoAnd of course we have to have lobster on Thanksgiving.  Would you expect anything less from a Chinese family?

Thanksgiving 2011 photoWe ate like kings and we drank like kings.  It started out with Ruinart.

Thanksgiving 2011 photoThen moved to 2004 Cristal.

Thanksgiving 2011And ended with 2003 Mouton Rothschild.  This bottle is valued at over $900.  It was delicious.

Thanksgiving 2011 photoWe also celebrated Jennie’s birthday because it was just a couple days away.  She was turning 25 and felt old…Ha!

Thanksgiving 2011 photoWe call this Mimi’s skeleton smile.  This is one of our hello kitty candles we use for all our birthday cakes. Happy Birthday Jennie!

Apple Picking 2011

November 3, 2011 by ChrissyJee 4 Comments

Apple Picking 2011 photoI grew up in Upstate New York in a super suburban town called Clifton Park.  The activity everyone does in the Fall is go apple picking.  There are many orchards to choose from and the apples are the best in the state.  Even though we live in Westchester now with orchards nearby, we always make the trip up to my home Upstate to go apple picking.  Bowman’s is the orchard we go to every year because it has the best apples.

Apple Picking 2011 photoMimi picks apples for like two seconds then heads to the children’s play area with my Dad.

Apple Picking 2011 photoThis year there was a hayride around the orchard.  She thought is was the best thing.  Jeff was the lucky one to take her on the ride.

Apple Picking 2011 photoShe thought she was the princess of the orchard.  Look at that wave…she is a natural.

Apple Picking 2011 photoNow this is something that has never happened ever.  This is the first time my brother has pushed a baby carriage.

Sami and Mike’s Wedding

November 2, 2011 by ChrissyJee Leave a Comment

Sami is my Jewish cousin.  I am her Chinese cousin.  She is my Dad’s best friend’s daughter.  We are not blood related but we are family.  On Saturday, October 29, she married Mike Marsh at The Palace Hotel (super fancy!) in NYC.  It was a beautiful wedding.

Sami & Mike's Wedding photoSami was a beauuuutiful bride.  Uncle Ronnie and Aunt Cheryl were so proud walking her down the aisle.

Sami & Mike's Wedding photoSami and Mike were calm and cool under the chuppah.

Sami & Mike's Wedding phototTheir chuppah was so pretty.

Sami & Mike's Wedding photoEnjoying the cocktail hour.  Those lamb chops are still melting in my mouth.  I’m still dreaming about the oysters and crab!

Sami & Mike's Wedding photoKa Ka and Bet looking so glamorous.

Sami & Mike's Wedding photoSami finally makes it to the cocktail hour.  Can’t believe she is married!

Sami & Mike's Wedding photoArtie made friends with a much much older couple so he could sit at their cocktail table near the bar and eat his food.  He talked with his new friends for a while.  About what, who knows.  Finally was able to pull him away for a picture.

Sami & Mike's Wedding photoChatting with my cousin Karyn and Aunt Alice.

Sami & Mike's Wedding phototGreat picture of my Dad and me.  He didn’t think he would fit his tuxedo, but he did.  He felt so skinny that day!  He is wearing his new modern trendy glasses.  I almost don’t recognize him!

Sami & Mike's Wedding photoWe miss Ka because she lives in Sacramento, CA.  Hopefully she’ll move back to the East Coast one day.

Sami & Mike's Wedding photoA family picture in the dining room.

Sami & Mike's Wedding photoThe newly married couple and their first dance.

Sami & Mike's Wedding photoThe wedding challah.  The waiter didn’t like such close contact to the bread and wheeled it away after this picture.

Sami & Mike's Wedding photoIt’s time to party and things are starting to get crazy.

Sami & Mike's Wedding photoDrunk and confused.

Sami & Mike's Wedding photoI should have worn black to fit in with everyone.  Or maybe they should have worn color to not be so boring.

Sami & Mike's Wedding photoKimbie and her boyfriend Mike.

Sami & Mike's Wedding photoMatty and my Mama.

Sami & Mike's Wedding photoMy Mama and me.  I think she hung out at our table all night to hide from my Dad who really wanted her to dance with him.  No matter what my mom says, he’s really a romantic guy.

Sami & Mike's Wedding photoCan you believe this is Bet?!

Sami & Mike's Wedding photoWe didn’t even need to go to the dance floor to dance and sing.

Sami & Mike's Wedding photoYou could barely fit onto the dance floor.  What a great party!

Sami & Mike's Wedding photoMichael (Sami’s brother) dancing to Michael Jackson.  Look at him strut his stuff.  Love it!

Sami & Mike's Wedding photoLove was in the air for more then just the wedding couple.  Go Uncle Ronnie and Aunt Cheryl!

Sami & Mike's Wedding photoThe three boys that grew up together in the Bronx.  Why is my Dad trying to take a picture while being pictured?

Sami & Mike's Wedding photoFinally got my husband onto the dance floor.  I tell him all the time I would practice dancing at home with him to build up his confidence.

Sami & Mike's Wedding photoTheir wedding cake was the moistest chocolate cake I’ve ever eaten.

Sami & Mike's Wedding photoThe dessert was a million layer crepe cake and creme brulee.  Delicious.  The box of matches didn’t come on the plate.

Sami & Mike's Wedding photoMy BFFTT Michael.

Sami & Mike's Wedding photoSami and Mike, we had a wonderful time at your beautiful wedding.  We wish you a lifetime of love, luck, and happiness.
