Mid-Autumn Moon Festival Lantern Symbolism

September 7, 2014 by ChrissyJee Leave a Comment

Mid-Autumn Moon Festival Lantern Symbolism

This year the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival falls on September 8, 2014.  I wanted to do a craft with the girls to celebrate the festival. Last year we made paper lanterns, and now that the girls are a year older, they were ready to make glass lanterns.  The girls had a lot of fun painting the glue on the glass jar and sticking the paper to it, but that was nothing compared to the excitement when they saw their lanterns light up.

The moon is celebrated during this festival because of legends like Chang E Flying to the Moon or Jade Rabbit or Wu Gang Chopping the Laurel Tree.  Lanterns are carried and lit throughout the festival to celebrate the brightness of the moon.

Happy Lighting,

The Big 3

August 26, 2014 by ChrissyJee Leave a Comment

The Big 3Baby turned 3 this week.  She had a big birthday party back in June with her sister so we kept the celebration on her actual birthday small.  What I’ve come to realize throwing big and small celebrations for two little ones is the size of the celebration doesn’t matter to them.  Kiss, hug, a thoughtful gift, and special treat is all they need to feel extra special on their birthday.  Now that Baby is 3, she understands a birthday is a special day so she was excited for all of the little celebrations we had planned for the day.

The Big 3It all started the night day before when the girls finally go their birthday present from Grouchy Husband and I.  We made an agreement that they would have a birthday party on Princess’ birthday and they would get their gift on Baby’s birthday so something fun would be happening on both days.  They could pick individual gifts or one big gift and after many tireless conversations trying to convince them to get desks, a bike, etc, they only wanted a Barbie Dream House.

The Big 3I asked Grouchy Husband if he ever thought he would be buying a Barbie Dream House.  He said he always thought he would have sons and be teaching them how to ride motorcycles…haha.  It took him 2 hours to put it together and could not have done it without YouTube videos.  The girls love the the Barbie Dream House and have played with it for hours.  I never thought I would say I’m glad we bought it.

The Big 3Baby celebrated with strawberry popsicles at Chinese camp.

The Big 3Keeping with family tradition, she had a Carvel ice cream birthday cake.

The Big 3And for the first time blew out all of the candles by herself.

The Big 3Grouchy Husband brought home sparklers for the girls to celebrate the special day.

We had a wonderful day celebrating Baby’s birthday.  Now that she is 3 I don’t feel like I have a baby anymore.  In many ways it makes me sad but I am also excited to watch her grow up.

Happy Birthday Baby.  Mama loves you always.

Roast Pork Buns (Char Siu Bao) at Mei Li Wah

August 22, 2014 by ChrissyJee Leave a Comment

Chinatown Manhattan Best Pork Buns Mei Lai WahI grew up eating pork buns from Mei Li Wah.  They are my favorite because:

  • bun has great flavor, elasticity, and perfect sweetness
  • great filling flavor.  Pork is cut in chunks, not minced.
  • filling is not artificially dyed red
  • no onions

These pork buns do have two drawbacks, they are smaller then others and sometimes you’ll find small chunks of fat in the filling (some call this flavor).  Even with these drawbacks, they are still my favorite roast pork buns in Chinatown Manhattan. Chinatown Manhattan Best Pork Buns Mei Lai WahMy family started buying from Mei Li Wah because it was the only place that sold steamed beef rice noodle dim sum with sliced beef, not minced meat.  This was the best steamed beef rice noodle in town.  As long as I could remember, there were two grumpy old men you would always see behind the counter every day.  Even though these two old men never smiled and spoke abrasively to all customers, there was always a line, mostly buying dozens of pork buns.  A few years ago, the owners changed, the grumpy men were replaced with young ladies, the menu changed, and recipes changed like the beef rice noodle now have minced meat.  Thankfully, the pork bun recipe has stayed the same.

Do you have a favorite roast pork bun bakery?

Chinese Camp Beach Day

August 21, 2014 by ChrissyJee 1 Comment

Chinese Camp Beach DayMy daughters are spending 4 weeks in Chinese camp this summer.  This camp is run by the Chinese school they go to during the school year.  My family speaks Cantonese (my husband and I speak very very little at home) but I want the girls to learn Mandarin because it is the official language of China and will be more useful to them in the future.  I know it’s been hard for them to learn because they are only exposed to Mandarin for 45 minutes a week at school.  So I enrolled them into camp because it is 6 hours a day and completely taught in Mandarin.

Every 2 weeks the camp puts on a performance and plans a field trip.  The first trip was to Harbor Island Park.  The performance was super cute.  Baby is the youngest in the camp so watching her performance was also so funny.

Chinese Camp Beach DayShe always seemed to be doing something different then all of the other children performing…

Chinese Camp Beach Day…she loves an audience so it didn’t matter to her.

Chinese Camp Beach DayAll of the performances were so great.

Chinese Camp Beach DayThe camp was small and intimate.  They came home singing the songs learned at camp and practicing their speaking parts in the performance.

Chinese Camp Beach DayAfter the performance we all headed to the beach park for a day of fun.  The first activity was a scavenger hunt.  Everyone got a green card with things they had to find and say in Chinese.

Chinese Camp Beach DayDuring the instructions, the teacher said something funny and all of the children laughed.  This reminded me of a day when the girls will make fun of me in Mandarin knowing I won’t understand them.  I want them to learn the language so badly I’m ok with this.

Chinese Camp Beach DayThe girls got a sticker for every item they found and said in Chinese.

Chinese Camp Beach DayThe teachers walked around to help everyone.

Chinese Camp Beach DayI really like the camp because they play the same games kids in China would play.  One of the games the kids played at the park was similar to duck-duck-goose but with a bean bag.  One child with the bean bag (Child 1) would walk around a circle of children.  Child 1 would drop the bean bag behind someone in the circle (Child 2).

Chinese Camp Beach DayChild 2 gets up to chase Child 1 around the circle and try to tag Child 1 before they sat in Child 2’s spot.

Chinese Camp Beach DayIf Child 2 gets tagged, they have to sit in the middle of the circle.

Chinese Camp Beach DayThe other game the kids loved to play was Da Yeah Ya, 打野鸭, or “hit the duck”.  It’s a simple, silly game.

Chinese Camp Beach DayOne half of the group forms a circle and are the hunters, the other half stands inside the circle and are the ducks.

Chinese Camp Beach DayThe hunters throw balls and try to hit the ducks in the middle of the circle.  If they hit a duck, they switch spots.  Baby is a little too young to play the game so she walked around collecting the balls.

Chinese Camp Beach DayAfter the games, we ate lunch together.

Chinese Camp Beach DayThen we played at the beach.

Chinese Camp Beach DayThe girls found a horse shoe crab at the beach.  Baby felt like one of the big girls except she wasn’t tall enough to see the crab in the bucket.

Chinese Camp Beach DayAfter the beach the kids played in the spray park.  The water was freezing but the kids didn’t care.

Chinese Camp Beach DayBaby wasn’t as excited about the spray park.  She found a rock to play with.  Over and over, she would pick up the rock.

Chinese Camp Beach DayTake a few steps into the spray park.

Chinese Camp Beach DayFeel a little spray and run out.

Chinese Camp Beach DayAt the end of the day, candy was handed out to everyone who found everything on their green cards.

Even after just a couple of weeks at Chinese camp, the girl’s language has improved so much…even Baby.

Nom Wah Tea Parlor

August 17, 2014 by ChrissyJee 2 Comments

Nom Wah Tea ParlorChinatown has always been a second home to me.  My mom grew up there and my grandparents lived there so we visited all of the time.  Because my mom and grandparents were part of the community we had our favorite restaurants and bakeries.  Throughout the years I lived in Chinatown at my grandparent’s apartment after college and even the last 8 years I’ve lived in the suburbs, I’ve continued to go to these family favorites.  Having these favorite places can make Chinatown seem small sometimes so I’ve decided to expand my Chinatown universe and try new places.  I’ve been looking forward to trying dim sum at Nom Wah Tea Parlor after reading articles like this one and this one.

Nom Wah Tea ParlorNom Wah feels like you have walked back in time inside.  The lighting, red vinyl booth seats, tables, super cool!  My mom and grandmother had not been inside for decades.  They said it looked different the last time they were there, more like a restaurant.

Nom Wah Tea ParlorYou don’t see dim sum carts being pushed because the food is made to order.  These are the menus to place your order.

Nom Wah Tea ParlorThis is my grandmother and daughters waiting for the food to come.  I don’t know who adores who more, my grandmother or daughters!

Here are photos of our favorite dishes at Nom Wah…

Nom Wah Tea ParlorOne of my favorite dim sum dishes is cilantro and scallion rice roll.  Nom Wah does an excellent job, the rice roll was perfect silky and soft.

201408_food_nomwah_05The steamed roast pork buns were a huge hit with the girls.

Nom Wah Tea ParlorMy Grouchy Husband really liked the shrimp sui mai.

Nom Wah Tea ParlorSteamed spare ribs were delicious.

Nom Wah Tea ParlorMy mom’s favorite dim sum is the bean curd skin roll.  The shrimp and pork filling had great flavor.

Nom Wah Tea ParlorMy dad’s favorite dim sum is the rice roll with fried dough.  Nom Wah does a great job with their rice roll.

Nom Wah Tea ParlorSticky rice in lotus leaf was awesome.

Nom Wah Tea Parlor We ordered the pan fried noodles to compliment the dim sum at the table.  The noodles had a great texture.

The food came out quickly and the service was very friendly.

Cheers to Nom Wah for a great dim sum experience,

Camp Swim

August 5, 2014 by ChrissyJee Leave a Comment

Camp SwimPrincess started the summer off at the town recreation camp.  She got to see her favorite friends from school, hang out with the high school student counselors all day, and eat ice cream pops every day.  This was her first year at the town camp and saying she “loved” it would be a total understatement.

At camp, Princess goes to the town pool for swim instruction and play every day.  One day the parents were invited to observe their pool time.  It was a cooler day so the girls were hesitant to get into the water.

Camp SwimOnce they got into the water, it was time to blow bubbles and kick.

Camp SwimPrincess was having some technical difficulties with her goggles that day.  They were way too tight and twisted.  Baby likes to go into her book bag at night and play with her stuff so I’m guessing she decided to adjust her sister’s goggle straps.

Camp SwimThe girls take turns practicing their strokes to the swim instructors.

Camp SwimThey practice freestyle, breast stroke…

Camp Swim…and back floats.  This one is a star back float.

Camp SwimIt was too cold to stay in the water the whole time so instruction ended early.

Goodbye Hoffman’s Playland

August 4, 2014 by ChrissyJee Leave a Comment

Goodbye Hoffman's PlaylandDuring our annual summer trip to my parent’s house in Upstate New York, we made sure to visit Hoffman’s Playland because it will be closing in September after being in business for over 60 years.  From what my Dad has told me, Mr. Hoffman, after so many years of running the amusement park, has been unsuccessful in finding someone to take over and will be selling the land to a developer.  It’s sad to know such a magical, childhood place will no longer there after this year.  I wanted to make sure the girls remembered Hoffman’s Playland so they went 3 times over the weekend.  The first visit was with Princess’ friend from school.  Her mom grew up in Albany and they also visit Hoffman’s in the summer.  It was really fun for the girls to enjoy the time with friends from home.  The second trip was with my parents.  They were babysitting while my Grouchy Husband and I went to my brother’s event at Fasig Tipton in Saratoga.  The last visit was unplanned.  The night before with my parents, right before the park was going to close they had enough tickets to go on 2 rides.  They were going to ride the hot air balloon and then the carousel.  When they got to the carousel, the attendant said the ride was closed.  This was absolutely devastating for Baby.  She had a complete meltdown and couldn’t leave the park until every light turned off.  As you can see, the last visit was absolutely necessary.

Goodbye Hoffman'sThey were allowed to choose 2 rides on their last visit and they chose the ferris wheel and hot air balloon.  I’m not quite sure why they chose the ferris wheel, no one was on the ride and there was no line.  The attendant gave them strict instructions to sit back, hold onto the bar, and no rocking.  They took him very seriously.

Goodbye Hoffman's PlaylandThey sat like this the whole time.

Hoffman's PlaylandIt was a little 8-seat ferris wheel but the girls thought it went so high.  Princess said she could see my parents house from the top and they live 20 minutes away.

Goodbye Hoffman's PlaylandNow onto the hot air balloons.  This is a more popular ride so there was a little line.  The girls show off their last Hoffman’s Playland tickets.

Goodbye Hoffman's PlaylandThey choose their balloon.

Goodbye Hoffman's PlaylandAnd swung around…

Goodbye Hoffman's Playlandand around…

I’m so sad Hoffman’s will no longer be part of the girl’s childhood but I know their memories of this magical place will always be with them.

Goodbye Hoffman’s Playland,

Chicken

July 14, 2014 by ChrissyJee 1 Comment

Chicken Symbolism In my 37 years (yikes!), I’ve eaten a lot of chicken.  Stir-fried chicken with any vegetable, homemade chicken broth when sick, whole chicken at every wedding or special occasion, even Drunken Chicken every day for a month after having my babies.  To say the least, the chicken is a highly regarded animal in Chinese culture.

Whole Chicken for Family Unity

Seeing and eating all the parts of a chicken was life in a Chinese family.   Head, neck, feet, liver, all parts were either eaten or used to make broth, nothing went to waste.  I would visit my  grandparents in Chinatown and see whole chickens hanging in the restaurant windows.  A whole chicken would be at all of our family gatherings or celebrations because it was a symbol of family unity and togetherness.

Marriage Chicken for Harmony and Happiness

In Chinese legends, if you saw a phoenix or dragon it was very lucky and you would experience a long period of peace and good fortune for yourself and your country.  The phoenix, associated with Yin (female), and a dragon, associated with Yang (male), is the primary symbolism seen at Chinese weddings to bring harmony and happiness to a marriage.  You will see the the phoenix and dragon symbolism in decorations, on red envelopes, and in food.  A whole chicken, representing the phoenix, and lobster, representing the dragon, are both served at Chinese wedding banquets.

Nutrient Dense Chicken Bone Broth

Bone broth is a delicious food that is also a healthy medicine for the liver and kidneys.  Cooking bones in water for a long time allows the minerals and nutrients to break down into the broth promoting strength, increasing energy in the blood, rehabilitating the body during sickness, and helping to prevent bone and connective tissue disorders.   All of that in a soup!  I have a storage bag in my freezer of all of the cooked, eaten, raw bones from baked, boiled, fried chickens, and every two weeks I boil them in a big stock pot with any grass-fed or free range meat I have in the refrigerator for 10-15 hours so I always have broth.  I try to incorporate broth in all my meals as a soup or stew, side dish, or in place of water to cook rice.  My girls love soup so it’s an easy way to give them nutrients and they don’t have to take their Fermented Cod Liver Oil every day.

Chicken Every Day

Because of all of the medicinal properties of chicken bone broth, I’ve grown up with the understanding that chicken was nutritious and ate it almost every day.  My mom is an amazing cook and she would stir fry chicken with any vegetable because this was the most economical way to feed a single income family of six.  I remember her spending the time deboning chicken thighs and chopping them up into small pieces because buying chicken with the bones was cheaper then boneless and she could use the bones for broth.

Farm Day

July 13, 2014 by ChrissyJee Leave a Comment

Farm DayWe had a free Saturday and it was going to be a beautiful day so we drove 1.5 hours north to Greig Farm in Red Hook, NY to go berry picking.  We could have gone to a closer farm to pick berries but Greig Farm had goats you could feed which was totally worth the extra half hour.

We’ve gone to feed the animals at the Bronx Zoo enough times to know you need a pocket of quarters and a cup to make multiple purchases of food at one time so you don’t have to go spend time going back to the machine.  Grouchy Husband gave the girls some quick instruction and strategy to get them started.

Farm DayPrincess started feeding right a way.

Farm DayBaby needed a little help but eventually got over her fear and then one of the goats nipped her a little and then she was back to being scared.

Farm DayThe farm has a Farmer’s Market on Saturdays.  I love shopping at Farmer’s Markets.

Farm DayWe ate lunch at the farm and these gigantic fresh pear and peach popsicles.

Farm DayThe girls couldn’t finish all of the frozen parts so my Grouchy Husband and I ate them.  They wanted the juice at the bottom.  Baby needed help getting the juice up the bag.

Farm DayAnd a little bit spilled out and down her dress.  The juice was very cold!

Farm DayAfter lunch we headed to the fields to pick raspberries and blueberries.  It is the end of raspberry season so we wandered through many empty patches.  The girls were starting to get a little disheartened.

Farm DayThen we found a few bushes that had some tiny raspberries.

Farm DayWe didn’t end up getting that many raspberries but the girls were thrilled.

Farm DayThen we headed to the blueberry patches and since it’s the beginning of the season the bushes were filled.  The bushes are short and perfect height for little people to pick.

Farm DayBaby wasn’t that interested in picking, she was more interested in eating.  All I kept hearing her say to her older sister, “You want me to try this one?”  She was quality control.

Farm DayEven my Grouchy Husband was picking.

Farm DayI think he even enjoyed it!

Farm DayWe filled half the bucket, the other half is in Baby’s stomach (haha!).

I sometimes wish I lived on a farm because I love the concept of living off the land and getting food from their source.  After 1 hour of berry picking I am reminded how much work it is to be a farmer and have a renewed appreciation for them and know that I’m not ready to be a farmer yet.

Thank you to all the Farmers,

Birthdays

June 30, 2014 by ChrissyJee 6 Comments

BirthdaysI am very busy recovering from a back-to-back friend then family birthday party for the girls.  Princess turned six this weekend and even though Baby turns three in August, my Grouchy Husband and I decided to combine their birthday celebrations because summers can get so busy.  Both the friend and family celebrations were fantastic, a lot of work, but totally fantastic!

For the kiddie party, I planned out a carnival themed party where they would play games, watch a magic show, and a few other surprises.  My parents have the perfect yard for the party so we decided to host it there.  This is what it looked liked before the party.

BirthdaysSince this was a party for little people, I rented chairs and tables especially for them.

BirthdaysMy brother was the executive chef for both parties and Oz, our friend and family caterer was by his side keeping him in check.  The menu for the kids was chicken fingers, mini hamburgers, tater tots, and corn.  My brother’s first job was at KFC so the recipe he used for the chicken fingers he learned while he worked there.  Here, my brother and Oz are discussing the menu and schedule while searing the burgers.

BirthdaysAnd of course we had the Dobbs Dawg House food truck serving at the party.

This picture and the rest of the pictures in this blog post were taken by Chong Oh, one of our little friend’s Dad.  He is an amazing photographer.  I had high ambition to take photos during the party while entertaining guests and managing everything.  Of course this did not happen so I am so grateful for Chong sharing his photos with me.

BirthdaysThe party started off with carnival games.  One of the games was water balloon piñata.  It was a huge hit for the little kids…

Birthdaysand big kids…

BirthdaysThere was also ring toss, corn hole, and ping pong squirt.  The kids won gold coins for winning the games that they would later turn in for prizes.  I am eternally grateful to my sister-in-law, mother-in-law and cousins for being the game attendants.  My youngest sister was in charge of facilities to make sure everything ran smoothly.  I could not have pulled off this party without them.  So blessed to have such amazing family.

BirthdaysAfter the carnival games there was a magic show with Richie from Hocus Pocus Magic Shop.

BirthdaysMy Grouchy Husband was even part of one of the tricks.

BirthdaysThe kids loved the show.

BirthdaysJimmy’s Soft Serve ice cream truck surprised the party.

BirthdaysThe kids loved being able to order anything they wanted.  Look at the huge strawberry milk shake Baby is drinking.

BirthdaysThen we sang Happy Birthday and ate cake from Lulu’s Cake Boutique.  We had a small mishap with the candles which is why you see a “2” on Princess’ cake.  One of our hello kitty candles we use on every birthday cake (kids and adults) finally ran out of wick.  It was a great candle with many many memories, the last one being not able to light up for a double birthday with over thirty-five kids waiting to sing “Happy Birthday” (haha).

BirthdaysThe prizes were light up wands, swords, microphones, and bubble blowers…just like you would win at a real carnival.

BirthdaysThe kids had a lot of fun playing with their prizes.

BirthdaysMy cousin led the after-party.  I’m not sure if this could be considered organized play because at one point I saw all of the kids hitting him with their carnival prizes.

The kiddie party was a huge success.  Princess and Baby, and all of their friends had an amazing time.  Then came the family party.  We had a wood fire and made paella and churrascaria. I don’t have any photos from this party because even though this party was more laid back, I was so tired from the kiddie party and just wanted to talk and drink.

As I slowly catch up on my rest and return back to my regular self, I realize my babies are now six and almost three.  Wow, how time flies.

Tired Mama of a 6 and Soon-to-Be 3 Years Old,
