Favorite Moments From Fasig-Tipton

August 16, 2015 by ChrissyJee Leave a Comment

Fave Moments from Fasig TiptonAnother year of Fasig-Tipton events have come to an end and this year was especially fun because I went to almost all of them.  Usually I only stay the weekend and go to one, maybe two events, this time since my parents are selling the house I grew up in, I decided to stay a week.  Fasig-Tipton is the auction house for thoroughbred racing horses and even though I am not in the market to buy a racing horse, my brother’s company, Sherry-Lehmann, hosts all of the events for horse buyers and I go as his guest.

The first event was a cocktail party.  My sisters were in town helping to clean out their rooms at my parent’s house so they also came to the party.

Fave Moments from Fasig TiptonWe also saw my Jewish cousins.  Sami runs all of Sherry-Lehmann’s PR and Michael was in town from London on holiday.  It was a great night with my sisters and catching up with my cousins.

Fave Moments from Fasig TiptonThe next night we went to the gala.  Grouchy Husband was suppose to come but he was tired from spending the whole day at the Saratoga Race Track so my mom came with me.

Fave Moments from Fasig TiptonAnne Burrell was the guest of honor and my mom really likes her so she was excited to go.  We even got a great picture with her.

Fave Moments from Fasig TiptonThe gala was at the Canfield Casino which is a historic, regal building with gorgeous architecture.

Fave Moments from Fasig TiptonThe last event I attended was the last night of horse auction sales.  This is the first year I saw the horses being auctioned off.  I was amazed at how much these horses cost!

Fave Moments from Fasig TiptonMy dad was my date that night.  His best friend and his wife, parents to my Jewish cousins, were there also so we were in great company.  There were a lot of horse buyers from Kentucky so it was great to hear their accents.

Fave Moments from Fasig TiptonA highlight of the night was meeting my high school friend at the event.  It’s been 20 years since we graduated, marriages and babies later, we had a great time chatting, catching up, and remembering high school.

All of the events had amazing champagnes and wines but what made these evenings so special was the fantastic company.

Track Day

August 12, 2015 by ChrissyJee 1 Comment

Track DayEvery year during the summer we go to my hometown of Clifton Park, NY and spend a day at the Saratoga Race Track.  We use to go Labor Day weekend because it was the last weekend of the season and not crowded, but the past few years my brother’s company, Sherry-Lehmann, has been throwing parties during the Fasig Tipton horse sales weekend so we’ve been going early August.  Even though we lived so close, my family never went growing up.  It was expensive and my parents were conservative with our family actives, a day of gambling didn’t make the list.  I started going when I was in high school with my friends and then after college we started going as a family.

Usually all my family goes up to the race track to visit my brother at his event, but my parents are selling the house this year, so they were busy cleaning out their rooms and fixing up the house.  The girls needed an activity so Grouchy Husband and I took them to the race track.

We all jumped in the parent’s minivan to go.  The car seats were already in their car because the girls and I were staying the week while Grouchy Husband went back home to work.  This picture is a Kodak moment because driving a minivan is so “uncool” to Grouchy Husband.

Track DayThe Sherry-Lehmann event tent was right on the paddock, where the horses come before they go to race.
Track DayThis was the only time Grouchy Husband went to the paddock because we were told shortly after this picture that you couldn’t wear shorts.  It was a bit of a bummer but I love and respect the traditions in Saratoga.

Track DayThis was our table in the tent where we ate our Shake Shack burgers, decided our bets, and cooled off in the air condition.

Track DayWe also watched the races on the TV from the table.  The gorgeous blond at the table is my Jewish cousin.  She manages the PR for Sherry-Lehmann and it is so much fun to see her at this event.

Track DayWhen the horses came to the paddock before their race, we would go out and the girls would take pictures near the horses they chose to win.  Sometimes they chose separate horses.

Track DayAnd sometimes they chose the same horse.  This horse was special because not only did the girls bet him to win, but so did my parents.  My dad wanted us to bet for him the horse that had the jockey with the best record.  My mom wanted us to bet for her a grey horse.  Even though this horse was the last to get onto the race track, he was the first to past the finish line and everyone was a winner!

Track DayWe stayed for 4 races because it’s too boring for the girls to stay the whole day. Out of 4 races, we had winners in 3.

Track DayWe grabbed Shake Shack milk shakes on the way out.

Track DayWe didn’t get too far outside before the girls couldn’t walk anymore because their feet hurt.  Grouchy Husband went to get the car while we rested on a bench.

Track DayHurt feet and all, it was a great winning day at the track!

It’s sad to think we won’t be able to go to the house in Clifton Park next year during race track season. It’s now time to make new memories.

7 and Almost 4

August 2, 2015 by ChrissyJee Leave a Comment

7 and Almost 4 BirthdayGrouchy Husband and I along with the help of my parents and family hosted another birthday party for the girls.  It took me all year to forget how much work and stress last year’s party was and decide to throw another one! Last year’s was a carnival theme and total chaos but the kids had a blast.  This year I wanted a less stressful and crazy party so I found a local kids art studio to come and do an art project, and then had the magician from last year come again.  The planning went so well but then the day of the party Grouchy Husband’s hot dog truck broke down on the way and it poured rain so we had to put the whole party under tents. I’ve concluded a party with 35 kids, 50 adults, entertainment, and homemade food will always be stressful.  As much anxiety this party gives me, the girls have a blast so I’ll probably talk myself into throwing another one for them next year.

7 and Almost 4 BirthdayThe girls picked a project where they would paint murals of the ocean and then put a collage of sea creatures and mermaids on top.  Young at Art did an amazing job with the kids.

7 and Almost 4 BirthdayA table was setup with all of the materials to paint the mural and make the ocean collage.  The kids would go to the table to find what they needed and then go back to their seats to work on their projects.  Even in the pouring rain under a tent, all of the kids were totally into making their projects.

7 and Almost 4 BirthdayAt the very end, the kids could shake glitter on top of their collage.  This was Baby’s favorite part.

She wrote her own name tag and all of her friends.  She almost had her name right and proactively found a place for the last “a” in her name.  Miraculously, her friends were able to find and read their name tags.

7 and Almost 4 BirthdayAfter the art project, it was time to eat.  My mom cooked dumplings, fried rice, and lo mein noodles.  My brother made chicken fingers.  Since the hot dog truck broke down, Grouchy Husband went and got the hot dogs and we grilled them.  After dinner, the kids went to the ice cream truck to get a treat and get ready for a magic show.

7 and Almost 4 BirthdayIce cream all over their faces, the kids were mesmerized by the show.

7 and Almost 4 BirthdayThe girls had a blast being part of the magic tricks.

7 and Almost 4 BirthdayThey even got a fish from one of the tricks.

7 and Almost 4 BirthdayAdults even participated in the show.

7 and Almost 4 BirthdayThis is my Uncle Billy.  He is walking to do something for the party in the pouring rain.  The tent next to him is where my brother is doing all of his cooking.  I could not have thrown this party without my uncle, aunt, mom, dad, brother, sisters, cousins helping to cook, put up tents, help kids find their name tags and cups, shuttle kids to the ice cream truck in the rain, organize collages to dry, hand out goody bags.  The word “thank you” doesn’t even come close to how grateful I am for their help and love.

7 and Almost 4 BirthdayI feel like I can sleep a week after the party.  But then I realize that after the friend party is the family party.  As tired I am after the day, it’s always worth it to see the girl’s smiles and be so happy with their friends.

Aren’t these photos amazing?  Our friend, Chong Oh (Dad to Princess’ best friend), takes amazing photos and I am so thankful he captured the moments from the party when I was running around like a crazy person.

Even though Baby’s birthday is in August, she shares a party with Princess because many people are away in August and more importantly, I can only handle throwing one birthday party a year.

Happy 7th and Almost 4th Girls, Mama loves you always! xo

Lily’s Red Egg and Ginger

August 1, 2015 by ChrissyJee 3 Comments

Red Egg and Ginger Last weekend we attended my niece, Baby Lily’s, Red Egg and Ginger celebration.

The Red Egg and Ginger party is a celebration thrown by Chinese families usually a month after a baby is born to introduce them to family and friends, and give their Chinese name.  Back in history, infant mortality was high so when a baby survived a month, it was a reason to celebrate.  For both my girls, the party was about a month after they were born.  Now a days, the party can be after a 100 days or if you are Lily, after a year.  The red eggs symbolize luck, happiness, and fertility.  The ginger is believed to have warming and revitalizing properties and is given to the mother to recover after giving birth.  My mom stayed with me after I had my daughters and I ate a lot of ginger.

Red Egg and GingerThe party was at Delight 28, my family’s favorite restaurant in Chinatown NYC.

Red Egg and GingerMy grandparents and relatives came to celebrate.

Red Egg and GingerMy mom’s best friend, Joyce-Yee-Yee, came with her husband to celebrate.

Red Egg and GingerMy sister and her husband, Mike, thanked all their guests and explained why they chose Lily’s Chinese Name.

Red Egg and GingerThe first character in Lily’s name means charitable or giving and the second character means happiness or harmonious.

Red Egg and GingerThe “cool” cousins table.

Red Egg and GingerGuess who was the coolest?

Red Egg and GingerLily was held by all her favorite people.  My mom.

Red Egg and GingerMike’s mom.

Red Egg and GingerMike’s Dad.

Red Egg and GingerAnd of course me!

Red Egg and GingerMy sisters.  We might not look alike but we sound alike.  My Dad cannot tell us apart on the phone so he waits for the conversation to start before saying “hello” and our name.

Red Egg and GingerThe best gift to give at a Red Egg and Ginger celebration is a lucky red envelope.  Princess wrote Lily’s card.

Red Egg and Ginger Wishing Lily (monster) a healthy life filled with lots of luck and happiness.

One World Observatory

July 12, 2015 by ChrissyJee 1 Comment

One WorldGrouchy Husband has a group of his closest friends in New Orleans from when he lived their in college and years after.  Khanh is one of those friends.  Last weekend he and his family came to visit.  It was the first time their girls have visited New York so we planned site-seeing adventures.  First stop was One World Observatory.

One WorldIt was a busy week and I thought our tickets were for 9am but when we pulled the tickets out to give to the attendent, Grouchy Husband realized I bought the tickets for 10am.  I felt SO bad making everyone get up at 6:30am.  We used the wait time to take pictures.  Their girls are the same age as ours so it was instant fun and friends.

One WorldWhat I’ve come to realize when you raise girls is at some age (different for each girl), posing for pictures becomes something natural and they love doing it.  They create their own favorite poses.

One WorldThey are happy to listen to direction on how to create poses for the camera.

One WorldAnd love to let loose and take a silly photo.

One WorldOne World Observatory is on the 100, 101, and 102nd floors.  It’s amazingly a less then 60 second elevator ride.

One WorldOnce you get to the top, you can see the whole city.  The girls found the Statue of Liberty, the little green mark on the island in the middle of the photo.

One WorldThe observation decks provide 360 degree views and is an easy way to see the NYC landmarks.

One WorldThe girls loved looking out the windows.  They liked seeing where their Uncle Matt (kow-fu) and great grandmother (bak bak) lived.

One WorldThey loved the Sky Portal.  Cameras display what is doing on all the way down on the street.  Baby used the bars to play hop scotch.

One WorldEven after a rocky start (with the mixup of the ticket time) we had an awesome time at the top of the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

How to Foil Print Envelopes

June 8, 2015 by ChrissyJee 3 Comments

DIY Foil Print EnvelopesWhen I first decided to start a lucky envelope business I didn’t know anything about design software, printing or stationary.   Since there were no websites documenting how to foil print envelopes at home, I did dozens of google searches, spent hours watching YouTube videos and spent months corresponding with Frank Miller from colorfoils.com to figure out how to do it.  There were so many trials to overcome, printing over the seems without seeing an indent in the design, finding the tools and materials to use, I gave up so many times.  I bought the foil from Frank Miller, the foil printing expert, and he always had something to try to resolve every issue that came up, he helped me get my business started and is just awesome.

Let’s get started.  You need the following to foil print envelopes at home:

  • Design software like Adobe Illustrator
  • Laser printer
  • Laminator
  • Foil from colorfoils.com (start with the TRF Sampler)
  • Carrier board
  • Aluminum foil
  • Envelope
  • Scissors

DIY Foil Print EnvelopesThe process starts with printing your design in black on the envelope with a laser printer.  I used Adobe Illustrator to create the design.

DIY Foil Print EnvelopesPrint several envelopes at a time so that you can foil print all the envelopes afterwards and save time.  Depending if I am testing designs or fulfilling orders, I will print between 5 – 30 at a time.  The envelope paper has to have a smooth surface.  If there is too much lint, the laser design will not come out dark enough for the foil to stick.  You might have to test out different paper before you find one that works.

DIY Foil Print EnvelopesCut foil that is big enough to cover your design and fold over the top.

DIY Foil Print EnvelopesYou will need to buy 2 pieces of carrier board.  I was foil printing 4 3/4″ x 6 1/2″ envelopes.  You might need more if your envelopes are larger.

Cut 1 piece of carrier board to go underneath the envelope when it goes through the laminator.  It should not be more then a half inch bigger then the envelope with the flap opened because the foil could crease when it goes through the laminator.  Cut a piece of foil that covers at least half of the carrier board, edge to edge, but does not fold over it.

Cut 1 piece of carrier board to fit snug inside the envelope.  Start by cutting the carrier board 1/8″ less then the length and width of the envelope.  Putting the carrier board inside the envelope ensures the design is not affected by the seems in the envelope.

DIY Foil Print EnvelopesPlace the carrier board inside the envelope.  Make sure the board doesn’t overhang to the flap.

DIY Foil Print EnvelopePlace the envelop, design side up with the entire flap over the foil.  The glue on the flap will melt a little bit going through the laminator and the foil prevents it from sticking to the carrier board.

DIY Foil Print EnvelopesHeat the laminator to 355 – 360 degrees.  I usually turn it on when I’m laser printing the design so it can heat up and be ready when I want to foil print.  Grab a piece of foil and cover the design completely and then go over the top of the carrier board to the back.

DIY Foil Print EnvelopesThis is how it should look like in the back.

DIY Foil Print EnvelopesPlace the carrier board foil side first in the middle of the laminating area and slowly push it until the carrier board is picked up by the rollers inside.

DIY Foil Print EnvelopesThe laminator will feed the carrier board through.  The heat will stick the foil to the black design.

DIY Foil Print EnvelopesThe carrier board will be pulled by the internal rollers to the back.  Pick up the carrier board right after it comes out.  It will be hot so use gloves if necessary.

DIY Foil Print EnvelopesPeel the foil slowly.  Start from one of the corners closest to the flap and peel towards the edge with the foil folded over.  Doing this while it is hot will get the best foil coverage on the laser printed design.

DIY Foil Print EnvelopesRight after the foil is peeled, peel off the envelope flap from the aluminum foil.  The heat from the laminator will melt the glue to the foil.  This might be sticky but try to peel slowly and carefully.

DIY Foil Print EnvelopesRemove the carrier board from the inside of the envelope.

DIY Foil Print EnvelopesAnd that’s it!  You’re envelope is foil printed!

DIY Foil Print EnvelopesFinish foil printing the rest of your laser printed envelopes.  After your second envelope, you’ll get into a roll and the printing will be quick.  I’ve done 30 at one time.

This process takes some time to learn so be patient and do lots of test runs.  Good luck and share your experience.

Happy foil printing,
Chrissy xo

Honoring Mothers

May 11, 2015 by ChrissyJee 2 Comments

Honoring MothersMother’s Day weekend kicked off with a breakfast with Baby’s preschool class.  We ate fruit and mini waffles.  The class sang L-O-V-E by Nat King Cole to all of the moms.  I was serenaded with gifts all weekend from the girls.  A portrait of me with twinkly eyes.

Honoring MothersA placemat with my name spelled almost right.

Honoring MothersWe celebrated with the family at Landmarc in the Time Warner Center.  I was surrounded by three generations of amazing moms.

Honoring MothersEveryone had a great time and the food was awesome!

Honoring Mothers My youngest sister’s birthday was last week so we sang happy birthday to her at lunch.

Honoring MothersI love Mother’s Day.  I love hearing about everyone’s plans and all of the wonderful things they’ll do to honor their moms.  I love going to restaurants and seeing tables and tables of families and generations of moms.  It’s a blessing to have my mom in my life and to be a mom to these two little girls.

Happy Mother’s Day,

Day at the Garden

April 26, 2015 by ChrissyJee Leave a Comment

201504_life_garden_01It’s been a while since we’ve had a free Saturday so we decided to visit The New York Botanical Garden.  It was a beautiful day and just perfect for our visit.  We sat on a bench while Grouchy Husband renewed our membership and got tickets for the day.

201504_life_garden_22The girls tried to hide from me.  Can you see them?

201504_life_garden_02The garden was showing signs of spring and many things had started to bloom.  In the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden, there were these gorgeous caterpillars made with flowers.

201504_life_garden_03The first activity was to make a nesting bag of small twigs and string for birds to come and use for their nests.  You are suppose to hang the nesting bag on a tree like the one hung in the tree in the picture.

201504_life_garden_05The second activity was to make a planter and grow wheat grass.  The girls help my mom plant flowers every year so they are experts planting anything.

201504_life_garden_06After the activities, we went into the terrarium and the girls watered the plants with spray bottles.  It’s amazing how long they were occupied with a spray bottle.

201504_life_garden_07Grouchy Husband helped them find tadpoles in the pond.

201504_life_garden_04Princess could jump almost as high as the frog.

201504_life_garden_08The girls loved the high heels on this lady bug.

201504_life_garden_09Grouchy Husband in good company and relaxed on the wood recliner.

201504_life_garden_10The girls climbed to the top of the highest rock.

201504_life_garden_11After the Children’s Garden, we decided to take the tram to see the rest of the garden.  The line was very, very long so we ate snacks and relaxed while we waited.

201504_life_garden_12The girls got impatient waiting so they ran up and down the hill, touching the rock at the top.

201504_life_garden_13Grouchy Husband bought Baby matching shoes and I don’t like them because they are hard to put on and tie so she can only wear them on days when Grouchy Husband is around to put them on and take them off.  She loves these sneakers.

201504_life_garden_14Finally on the tram!

201504_life_garden_15The cherry blossoms were in full bloom and awesome.  You can’t but admire all of God’s creation at the garden.  This tree had a stand to keep one of it’s heavy branches up.

201504_life_garden_16The girls spent some time throwing pennies in the fountain.

201504_life_garden_18Before we left, we ate an early dinner.

201504_life_garden_17The pizza cheese was very stretchy so Princess tried to see how long she could stretch it.

201504_life_garden_20How blessed was I to spend the day with this little lady.

201504_life_garden_19And this one!

201504_life_garden_21Some last jumps before heading home after a long day of walking and activities.  The girls (and Grouchy Husband) (and I) were happy to head home and sit!

Happy Spring,

Chinese American Mom’s Guide to Finding a Good Husband

February 17, 2015 by ChrissyJee 2 Comments

PumpkinfestMy husband and I aren’t perfect.  In our marriage I am in constant battle between my conservative Chinese culture and free spirited American upbringing.  So how can I write this guide?  It’s because I know the best qualities in Chinese and American cultures, and even though my marriage is very far from perfect, I work hard to get it a little closer everyday.  This is not only a guide to find a good husband or spouse but also the guide to the wife I want to be.

Honor.  Definition: regard with great respect.  The biggest challenge I have with my husband is how very, very, very deep I have to honor him.  It must be the foundation of the relationship and cracks can destroy it.  When I was young, I thought I would have a husband just like Prince Charming.  He would slay dragons to save me, build a castle for us to live in, and we would host lavish balls that all our friends would come to.  My experience having a husband has not been anything like what I thought when I was young.  I never thought I would have to honor Prince Charming when he decided to be a police officer and I was always against having guns in the house, or when he got back on his motorcycle after his good friend passed away in a motorcycle accident, or when the tests for down syndrome of our unborn child came back high risk.  Honor is open communication but not necessarily agreeing.  He must honor everything that is important to you, family, friends, religion, health, career, aspirations, hobbies, culture…everything.

Provide.  Definition: to supply means of support.  This one is simple.  When you marry your husband you are both now the co-owners of a business called your life.  You both must work together and use your strengths and talents to have a successful life.  You want your husband to have the motivation and intelligence to do whatever is necessary to accomplish this.  The range of tasks is massive and spans from earning more money by taking a second job, to taking out the garbage, to making dumpling stickers for a Chinese lucky envelope business.

Romance. Definition: a feeling of excitement and mystery associated with love.  You must be attracted to his mind, body, and personality.  It doesn’t have to be in equal parts but some mix.  He must be thoughtful. You should be able to laugh together.  Romance is the internal smile when you see his number on your caller ID, the warm feeling when he does something for you unexpectedly, the tingly feeling when you think about sex with him.  This is the part of love that is crazy, fun, and doesn’t always make sense.

Did I miss anything?

Guide to HusbandMy parents would have liked me to marry a doctor or lawyer because these careers are regarded in the Chinese culture as stable and successful.  I married a police officer who owns a hot dog shop.  He likes anything that drives fast, junk food, and Nike sneakers.  He probably wasn’t the person my parents (or I) thought I would marry.  Through all our differences and imperfections, he is always up for date night, eats my gluten and dairy-free cooking, helped take care of my grandparents, supports the vision for my blog, etc, etc.

It doesn’t matter their career, where they are from, or how they got here, just as long as they honor, provide, and romance you.

Happy Belated Valentine’s Day,
Chrissy xo

Reunion Dinner

February 9, 2015 by ChrissyJee Leave a Comment

Closing Out the YearOur first Chinese New Year celebration was this weekend.  My grandparents hosted a “Reunion Dinner” at their favorite restaurant, Delight 28.  During the Chinese New Year season, families and friends get together before New Year’s for a “Reunion Dinner” to celebrate all accomplishments and good fortunes for the year.

Closing Out the YearThe girls had a birthday party before dinner and got a remote control helicopter and airplane.  Helicopters and airplanes aren’t toys two sisters usually get to play with so they were excited to open the boxes.  Actually, I don’t know who was more excited, the girls or their dad.

Closing Out the YearOnce they got the hang of it, it was so much fun.

Closing Out the YearFor this celebration, we drank 2008 Montrose for dinner.  Amazing.  My brother let me choose and I specifically wanted a 2008 vintage because that was the year Princess was born.

Closing Out the YearWe ate jai, a Buddhist vegetarian dish, to symbolize wealth and prosperity.  This dish is usually eaten new year’s day because not eating meat is believed to enhance longevity.

Closing Out the YearWe ate lobster complete with head and tail to symbolize wholeness.  The lobster is also red which symbolizes prosperity and good luck.

Closing Out the YearWe ate chinese fried chicken complete with head and tail to also symbolize wholeness.

Closing Out the YearWe ate extra long long life noodles to symbolize longevity.

Closing Out the YearWe ate clams in black bean sauce to symbolize prosperity because their shape resembles Chinese coin.

Closing Out the YearWe ate peking pork chop because their red color symbolizes prosperity and good luck.

Closing Out the YearPrincess really impressed us with her chop stick skills.  I don’t think I used chopsticks properly until I was 16.

Closing Out the YearOur favorite waitress at the restaurant is Hoong.  My grandmother comes to the restaurant almost every morning and Hoong really takes care of her.  She does the little things like bring my grandmother extra napkins and toothpicks which my grandmother loves.  My family really appreciates all of Hoong’s efforts.

Closing Out the YearWhen the food is coming to the table there isn’t much talking but as we get full, conversation starts.  Here is my mom’s family.

Closing Out the YearHere is Princess with my brother and dad.

Closing Out the YearThe meal always ends with sweets to represent a sweeter life.  We ate oranges.  This is the season for oranges so they were unbelievably sweet.

Closing Out the YearAnd sweet red bean soup.  This is a family favorite, especially Baby.

My grandparents use to host this party at their home and cook everything from scratch.  My grandfather use to own a restaurant and was the chef so as delicious as the food was at Delight 28, it was no comparison to his cooking.  As they have gotten older, we are not able to eat their home cooked “Reunion Dinner”, but I’m grateful to share this time with them at their favorite restaurant.

To all your accomplishments and good fortune,
The Dumpling Mama
